Pokémon Legends: Z-A is launching on October 16, 2025, and the latest reveal of Mega Dragonite has fans giddy with delight at what’s to come. The Mega Evolution mechanics seen in Pokémon X and Y were very well-loved back in the day, allowing fans to witness some of their favorite pocket monsters level up in ways that advanced them in terms of both power and form. More recent releases have largely ignored the system, but Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set to revive it for the fans.
While the Mega Dragonite reveal has been getting all the attention, it’s important to note that it isn’t the only Pokémon upgrading to a superior form. There are reportedly 25 new Mega Evolutions coming to the 2025 Pokémon game. The Mega Dragonite evolution was merely a good starting point for the announcement, considering its relevance to fans both old and new, however, we expect to see many others also level up upon the game’s release.

Mega Dragonite Reveal in the Pokémon Legends Z-a Trailer Has Fans Buzzing
Game Freaks and the Pokémon Company’s Pokémon Presents stream was less than half an hour long, but each announcement managed to hit the mark on gamer expectations in 2025. While the teaser for teaser for Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu was undoubtedly interesting, the Pokémon Legends: Z-A announcement was the center of the show, with the company confirming that the game was set to arrive on both the Switch and Switch 2 on October 16, 2025.
The Pokémon Legends Z-A Switch 2 edition release is primarily interesting because Nintendo is selling a bundle of the Switch 2 console combined with the game, which is now available for pre-order for $499. The bundle does not involve any kind of special redesigned Switch 2, so it isn’t of much interest to us, but if you haven’t bought the console yet, this new bundle might be your chance to finally drop a few hundred bucks on it.
Pokémon Legends Z-A Goes to Lumiose City
Pokémon Legends Z-A returns to Lumiose City, allowing trainers to explore the region and lure out wild Pokémon during the day and compete in the Z-A Royale and battle it out with other trainers at night. Bringing the best of the open-world format and battle format together for players to enjoy, the game also has storylines to follow, giving gamers a few mysteries to resolve as they play along.
Apart from encountering some strong alpha Pokémon in the wild, users can also look forward to understanding new rogue mega evolutions across Lumiose City and capturing the mega-evolved Pokémon in the game. When it comes to the battles, players can conduct trial recruitments to test our Pokémon or permanently recruit them for the full experience of fighting together with them. The game also has different battle formats, extending from ranked battles to casual and private ones for a wide variety of experiences to suit their mood.
Mega Dragonite Is Coming to Pokémon Legends Z-A
The trailer didn’t name every single one of the new Mega Evolution Pokémon coming in 2025, but it did reveal Mega Dragonite. With distinctive Dragonair-like features through its new design of angle-wings on its head, shoulder, and feet, and a pearl on its tail, the Dragon/Flying type combination Pokémon is going to be fun to catch when we finally get our hands on the game.
“Mega Evolution goes beyond the limits of standard Evolution, imparting even greater power by temporarily unleashing a Pokémon’s hidden energy. Pokémon will change their appearance when they Mega Evolve—and certain ones may even change types—but they’re still your same trusty partners!”
Polygon pointed out that from the description accompanying the Mega Dragonite trailer and considering the history of the mega evolutions in Pokémon X and Y, there has always been an ominous note to these unprompted evolutions. While we don’t see too much evidence to prove that the Mega Dragonite reveal in-game will be anything but friendly, it doesn’t hurt to watch out for darker undertones in the storyline as we proceed.
New Mega Evolution Pokémon Coming in 2025
The Pokémon Presents stream only revealed Mega Dragonite, but a previous trailer had already indicated that Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Absol, and Mega Charizard X could be expected to feature in the game.
Additionally, GameRant also found that the Mega Dragonite trailer confirmed the design of the Pokémon and matched it to a previous leak that had suggested the Mega Pokémon were on their way. By this measure, it was also possible to confirm that the other Pokémon mentioned in the leaks could arrive in this game. We can’t guarantee that these will be the exact Pokémon that get to celebrate their Mega evolution, but it’s a good starting point nonetheless.
