Honor Magic V5 Launch Brings The Thinnest Foldable on the Market

The Honor Magic V5 launch may be exclusive to China for now, but word of the thin smartphone is making its way around international markets.

It is more than apparent that “thin” is in this year, and the Honor Magic V5’s launch sealed the deal in that regard. The new smartphone’s claim to fame is that it is the thinnest foldable phone available right now, dethroning the Oppo Find N5 by a narrow margin to take the crown. The Magic V5 foldable is just 8.8mm when folded, and while the difference in use is likely to be indiscernible, it still counts as a win for Honor.

Focusing all the attention on its identity as the thinnest foldable, the Honor Magic V5 specs haven’t been showcased with as much fanfare, but there is quite a bit to credit in terms of its function and performance as well. The title of the thinnest foldable could go away at any moment when a sleeker device makes a debut, especially when that title is already standing on shaky ground, so it’s the actual performance of the device that matters.

Honor Magic V5 Launch—The Thinnest Foldable on the Market For Now

The Honor Magic V5’s launch saw the brand resecure its title as the thinnest foldable phone on the market, after its Magic V3 was robbed of it when Oppo released the Find N5. It might also be among the lightest foldable phones on the market at 217g, although it doesn’t appear that Honor is celebrating that title as loudly. Even when unfolded, the Magic V5 is still among the thinnest foldable, measuring 4.1mm. The tri-fold Mate XT is even thinner, but that’s a more complicated comparison to make.

The Magic V5’s title as the thinnest foldable also comes with some conditions that have to be acknowledged. The smartphone is available with different material builds depending on the color, and unfortunately, only the Ivory White variant gets to enjoy the title as the thinnest smartphone, as the other colors measure 9mm when folded, making it slightly thicker than the Find N5.

It is also interesting that the title is only valid if you consider the thickness of the main body of the phone. As The Verge notes, while both the Honor Magic V5 and the Oppo Find N5 have a similar circular, raised camera bump, the Magic V5 looks more bulky. Again, the difference is a minuscule one and doesn’t matter until you place them side by side, but it is a point worth noting nonetheless.

Honor Magic V5 Specs—What Does It Have to Offer Other than a Sleek Design?

The Honor Magic V5 specs are perhaps of greater relevance to the user compared to the size, so we can spare a moment to consider that as well. The smartphone uses a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 3nm chipset to power its operations, teaming up with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage to get things done. There’s also a special 1TB version for those interested.

The Honor Magic V5’s battery is also impressive, starting at 5,820 mAh but going up to 6,100 mAh on the expensive variant to give you a reason to make the purchase. It supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, so you get to enjoy both depending on your preference.

In terms of the display, you have two 120Hz LTPO OLED screens, one a 6.43-inch outer screen and the second a 7.95-inch inner screen, giving you more than enough room to watch your favorite shows or multitask with ease.

Honor Magic V5 Camera—Smile, Because This Smartphone Should Capture Every Detail

All the talk of the Magic V5 being the thinnest foldable has detracted from the more important details: the Magic V5 camera and battery. While we just discussed the impressive battery, the camera deserves a moment to shine. The circular design for the camera set-up was once an outlandish concept, but over time has become a well-loved setup. It’s not as unique as the Nothing Phone 3, considering other smartphone makers now have a similar lens housing system, but it is still distinct nonetheless.

The Magic V5’s camera functionality is made up of three rear lenses: a 50MP f/1.6 wide-angle lens, a 50MP f/2.0 ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP periscope lens with 3x optical zoom. You also have two 20MP lenses divided between the inner and outer screens. Is it the best camera setup on the market? Not necessarily, but it is certainly impressive for a foldable.

What Do You Think About the Honor Magic V5 Launch?

Overall, the Honor Magic V5’s specs and capabilities are impressive on their own, and Honor’s ability to fit it all into the thinnest form factor possible is extremely impressive. There is always the question of fragility when you talk about making things so thin and hard to maintain, and this is particularly relevant for a foldable, but only time will tell how long these smartphones last.

The Honor Magic V5 launch is currently only relevant to citizens in China, but the company reassured users that it would eventually see an international release as well, so you can keep your eyes peeled for more updates. Available in Ivory White, Black, Dawn Gold, and Reddish Brown colors, the look and feel of the smartphone definitely secures its image as a premium investment, but with Samsung all set to launch its own Galaxy Z Fold Ultra next week, the device could face some prime competition soon.

Apple is also working on an ultra-thin smartphone for its upcoming release, but it has no plans to enter the foldable market with it, so we should be able to evaluate how it performs in the standard smartphone market soon enough. The Magic V5 foldable has certainly caught our attention and secured a spot for itself on the smartphone market, especially if it expands to international markets in the coming weeks.
